Heraldic title used in Western Europe (specifically among the dominions of the Holy Roman Empire), from German Herzog. Cognate with Hungarian herceg, Serbo-Croatian хѐрцег (whence Serbo-Croatian Хѐрцеговина). Originally meaning army commander, a calque with native Bulgarian воево́да (voevóda), военача́лник (voenačálnik).
