From Proto-Mordvinic *šerši, borrowed from Proto-Baltic *šeršnas, *šar- (whence Lithuanian šer̃kšnas (“ripe; frost”), šir̃vas (“(blue)grey, mouldy”), Latvian sirms (“grey hair”)). Akin to Moksha шаржа (šarža).
Compare also Proto-Finnic *harmaga (“grey”) (from earlier *šarma), borrowed from the same source.[1]
