Via an intermediary (probably Mongolic) source, from Turkic *quduğ "well" (compare Old Uyghur (quduğ, water well);[1]), from Proto-Turkic *kud- (to pour).

Compare ҡойо (qoyo), the native Kypchak development from the same archetype, and ҡоҙоҡ (qoźoq).
