Old Armenian

Etymology

Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open, remarking only that the similarity with Persian داشاد (dâšâd, present, gift) is accidental. According to Pʿerixanyan, from Iranian *tačata- (swift; strong), from *tak- (to move, to be swift, to be strong); compare Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬑𐬨𐬀- (taxma-, strong) and Persian تهم (tahm, taham, brave). The name can also be derived hypocoristically from Iranian *Tačat-aspa- (possessing swift horses).
