From Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (“eye”). The exact route of derivation is disputed. Martirosyan proposes Proto-Armenian *ak(k)n ← *akʰkon ← *akʰ- ← Proto-Indo-European *h₃kʷ-, for the suffix comparing -կն (-kn) and Ancient Greek ὄκκον (ókkon). Other senses are formed by various associations with "eye" and have also occurred in Old Georgian თუალი (tuali).
