According to J̌ahukyan, probably from Proto-Indo-European *oleyd-, from *ley- (to eliminate, dissipate, disappear; weak, thin). Compare Old Norse lítt, German leiden.

According to Ałayan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *əleyd-, *oleyd- grown from the root *h₃elh₁- (to destroy).
