Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-h₁ewk-eno/eh₂- (one whose habitation, habits (or the like) is together with (somebody else)), from *sem- (together) and *h₁ewk- (be accustomed, learn), whence ուսանիմ (usanim). By surface analysis, ամ- (am-) +‎ ուսանիմ (usanim) +‎ -ին (-in). Among the cognates compare especially Sanskrit समोकस् (sám-okas, dwelling together, closely united with), ओकस् (okás, homestead, house) and possibly Latin uxor.

Had also been compared to Persian آموسنی (āmūsnī, co-wife), but Ačaṙean considers the similarity to be accidental due to the difference in meaning.
