From *այր (*ayr, fire) +‎ -եմ (-em) (which disappeared in competition with հուր (hur) due to homonymy with այր (ayr, man) and այր (ayr, cave)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₁ter- (fire).[1][2][3] Doublet of ատր- (atr-, fire).
