ասեմ

Old Armenian

Etymology

Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ǵ-, zero-grade of *h₂eǵ- (“to say”). The -ս- (-s-) instead of expected -ծ- (-c-) is probably from a perfect formation *h₂ǵ-t → -ստ- (-st-) and a generalisation of -ս- (-s-). The regular reflex *ած- (*ac-) may perhaps be seen in առած (aṙac).

1. to say, to express, to speak, to relate, to recite, to tell, to recount, to declare, to pronounce, to utter, to dictate

   ասել յառաջագոյն ― asel yaṙaǰagoyn ― to foretell

   ասել վերստին ― asel verstin ― to repeat

   չարիս ասել զումեքէ ― čʻaris asel zumekʻē ― to speak badly of a person

   բարիս ասել զումեքէ ― baris asel zumekʻē ― to speak well of a person

   ասա՛ ինձ ― asá inj ― tell me

   պարտ է ասել ― part ē asel ― one must say

   որպէս ասացաք ― orpēs asacʻakʻ ― as we have said

   համառօտ ասել ― hamaṙōt asel ― briefly, in one word

   չգիտեմ զինչ ասել ― čʻgitem zinčʻ asel ― I know not what to say

   զինչ ասիցեն զքէն ― zinčʻ asicʻen zkʻēn ― what will they say of you?

   անհիմն է զոր ասեսդ ― anhimn ē zor asesd ― what you say is without foundation

   չգիտէ զոր ինչ ասէ ― čʻgitē zor inčʻ asē ― he does not know what he says

   ցանգ զնոյն ասել ― cʻang znoyn asel ― to repeat always the same thing

   ասել զկարծիս իւր զիմեքէ ― asel zkarcis iwr zimekʻē ― to give one's opinion on some thing

   սուտ ասել ― sut asel ― to tell falsehoods or lies

   ասել զճշմարտութիւն ― asel zčšmartutʻiwn ― to speak the truth

   ոչ ասել ― očʻ asel ― to say no

   ասել այո ― asel ayo ― to say yes

   զինչ կամիցի ասել այս ― zinčʻ kamicʻi asel ays ― what does that mean?

   այլ զինչ ասեմս ― ayl zinčʻ asems ― but what do I say?

   ըստ ասելոյ իւրաքանչիւր ― əst aseloy iwrakʻančʻiwr ― as everyone says

   ասել ընդ միտս ― asel ənd mits ― to say to oneself

   զայս իբրեւ ասաց ― zays ibrew asacʻ ― when he has said that, at these words

   զայս ասացեալ ― zays asacʻeal ― that said

2. to sing (said of birds)
