From Arabic عُصْفُر (ʕuṣfur). The forms with an մ- (m-) are from the related مُعَصْفَر (muʕaṣfar, safflower).

Ačaṙyan records the given names Մասպուռ (Maspuṙ) and Մասփուր (Maspʻur) as alternative forms of Մասուր (Masur, literally rosehip),[1] but they are rather derived from this safflower word.
