From արեւ (arew) + ելք (elkʻ). The formation is an Iranian calque. Compare Parthian 𐫟𐫇𐫡𐫀𐫘𐫀𐫗 (xwrʾsʾn /xwarāsān/), Middle Persian (hwl-ʾsʾn' /xwar-āsān/, “sunrise, east”, literally “sunrise”).
