A Middle Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian (ʾwbʾhnl /āwahan/, “fortified place, stronghold”) and (a-v-h-n-m /āvahanam/, “village”). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *Hwah- (“to dwell, remain”); compare Classical Syriac ܐܘܘܢܐ (ʾawwānāʾ) from the same source.
