Etymology

Borrowing from Middle Iranian *zarrīk, by assimilation from earlier *zarnīk. Compare Persian زرنی (zarni), زرنه (zarna, arsenic) and the Iranian borrowings: Classical Syriac ܙܪܢܝܟܐ (zarnīḵā), Arabic زِرْنِيخ (zirnīḵ), زَرْنِيق (zarnīq), Turkish zırnık, Northern Kurdish zirnix, Ancient Greek ἀρσενικόν (arsenikón). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam (gold), because of the golden color of orpiment.
