Etymology

Related to Ancient Greek τάρπη (tárpē, large wicker basket) and with it inherited from Proto-Indo-European *tw(e)r-p- (to grab, enclose), from *twerH-; compare Lithuanian tverti (to seize, form), Russian твори́ть (tvorítʹ). Alternatively, the Armenian and Greek words are borrowed from a Mediterranean substrate source. For another possibly "Mediterranean" word from the same semantic sphere see ցանց (cʻancʻ).
