Etymology
A Turkic borrowing: compare Crimean Tatar tırşav, dialectal tışav, Tatar тышау (tışaw), Bashkir тышау (tışaw), dialectal Azerbaijani tuşağ, tuşax, dialectal Turkish duşak, doşak (“hobble”) etc, which are of native Turkic origin.[1]
Noun
թշու • (tʻšu)
- (dialectal, Nor Nakhichevan) hobble (used to fasten together the legs of a horse)
- Synonym: ոտնակապ (otnakap)
Usage notes
Because թշու (tʻšu) is not included in standard references apart from a few dictionaries,[2][3][4][5] and its place of attestation is unknown, it has been treated as a ghost word.[6] It should be recognized as belonging to the Nor Nakhichevan dialect, more properly spelled թշով (tʻšov) and with a derivative թշոնել (tʻšonel, “to hobble”).[7][8] Hence the closeness to Kipchak Turkic forms rather than to Anatolian Turkish and Azerbaijani.
