Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ulh₁ro- and cognate with Ancient Greek εὔληρα (eúlēra, “reins”) and Latin lōrum (“thong, rawhide whip, rein”). In view of phonological difficulties Martirosyan considers this a Mediterranean substrate term.
