Etymology

An ablaut grade of խայթ (xaytʻ), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂id-to-, from *kh₂eyd- (cut, hew). The sense “crocodile” developed from “rock, reef”. For the association of crocodile with rocks compare Ancient Greek κροκόδειλος (krokódeilos), said to be from κρόκη (krókē, pebbles).
