The origin is uncertain.[1][2] J̌ahukyan derives from Proto-Indo-European *gel-d-, from *gel- (to curl, ball up), with cognates in Proto-Germanic *klūtaz, *klautaz.[3][4] Ačaṙean derives from Proto-Indo-European *gʷed-lo-, from *gʷōw-, *gʷū- (dung, dirt), whence with a -dʰ- extension Proto-West Germanic *kwād, Proto-Slavic *gàditi, Lithuanian gė́da.[5][6] Compare also Northern Kurdish kirêt (ugly; repulsive, disgusting; hateful, horrible, bad; dirty, filthy).
