Etymology

Inherited from Old Armenian համար (hamar, “number”). The sense "for" is attested already in Old Armenian ի համար (i hamar), ի համարի (i hamari, “for, on account of”). The sense "room" is a semantic loan from Russian но́мер (nómer).

Etymology

An Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian (ʾmʾl /⁠āmār⁠/, “reckoning, consideration”), Persian همار (hamâr, “number, quantity, measure”), آمار (âmâr, “numeration, calculation”). For further origin see Old Persian *hammārakarah. Old Georgian ჰამარი (hamari) is borrowed from the same source, possibly via Armenian.
