Synonyms

Old Armenian

Etymology

Uncertain. Often assumed to be an inner-Armenian formation *մառ (*maṙ) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ *խուղ (*xuł), the first part being related to Old Armenian մայր (mayr), մառն (maṙn) and մռայլ (mṙayl), and inherited from Proto-Indo-European, and the second part being somehow related to Old Armenian խուղ (xuł, hut, hovel). More promising is Marr's comparison with Georgian მარახული (maraxuli), which has been connected with Proto-Nakh *marxo (cloud) (see these). We may be dealing with a word of ultimate Northeast Caucasian origin, borrowed via Old Georgian.
