An Iranian borrowing. Compare Parthian 𐫖𐫀𐫡𐫏𐫃𐫡 (mʾrygr /mārigar/, “sorcerer, incantator”), 𐫖𐫍𐫡𐫏𐫃𐫡 (mhrygr /mahrīgar/, “sorcerer”) and especially Sogdian (mʾrkrʾy, “soothsayer”), (mʾrkrʾk /mārkarē(k)/, “soothsayer”). Aghwan 𐕌𐔰𐕙𐕘𐔰𐕛𐔴𐕎 (marġaven) is also from Iranian.
