Etymology
The origin is unknown. Ačaṙean compares with Classical Syriac ܡܪܩ (mrq, “to cleanse; to polish”), ܡܪܝܩ (mryq /mrīq/, “clean”), Hebrew מָרוּק (mārūq, “scraping, rubbing”), Akkadian 𒈠𒊏𒆪 (/marāqu/, “to rub something smooth, to polish”), but considers the similarity coincidental. Probably somehow related to Georgian მაქური (makuri, “whetstone”).
