Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Perhaps from յ- (y-) +‎ Proto-Indo-European *o-gʷʰhon- or *o-gʷʰno- (compare Sanskrit आहनस् (ā-hanás), Persian آگندن (âgandan), آگن (âgan-, to fill)), from *gʷʰen- (to swell, abound) and cognate with Sanskrit घन (ghaná, compact, solid, hard, firm, dense), Ancient Greek εὐθενής (euthenḗs, in abundance), Lithuanian ganėti (to suffice), Old Church Slavonic гонѣти (goněti, to suffice).

As an alternative, Martirosyan connects with Ancient Greek ὄχλος (ókhlos) and hypothetically assumes a common borrowing of substrate origin.
