Old Armenian
Etymology
An Iranian borrowing, + -ք (-kʻ).
The first part goes back to an Iranian descendant of Proto-Indo-European *néwos (“new”) (compare Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀 (nauua)), the second is of uncertain origin.
Hübschmann identified it with Proto-Iranian *kata- (“house”) (compare Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬙𐬀- (kata-, “habitation”), Persian کده (kade, “habitation”)). But according to Jahukyan, it goes back to Iranian *kāti- (“wish, desire”) (compare Sanskrit काति (kāti, “wishing, desiring”)), from Proto-Iranian *kā- (“to strive for, to desire”) (compare the Iranian etymon of կամք (kamkʻ)) with the verbal suffix *-ti-.
