Etymology
An Iranian borrowing. Compare Old Persian *naftah (/naft/), Middle Persian (npt' /naft/, “naphtha”), Persian نفت (naft) and Central Kurdish نەوت (newt). Armenian նավթ (navtʻ) is a modern borrowing; the regular development from Old Armenian նաւթ (nawtʻ) would have been նոթ (notʻ), indeed found in some dialects.
