From Middle Iranian *šapīk. Compare Middle Persian (špyk' /⁠šabīg⁠/, undershirt), Persian شبی (šabi, nightly; nightshirt) and Southern Kurdish شەۊ (şeẅ, shirt). These derive from the word for “night”: see Persian شب (šab, night). Thus, the word originally meant “nightshirt”.
