Etymology
An Iranian borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *paridayjah. The word is often considered a very old borrowing because it supposedly participated in the prehistoric Armenian consonant shift *d → տ (t). A doublet of Middle Armenian պահէզ (pahēz), dialectal պախեզ (paxez).
