The origin is unknown.[1][2][3] Has been compared to Arabic رُمْح (rumḥ, “spear”), Classical Syriac ܪܘܡܚܐ (rūmḥā, “spear”), Northern Kurdish rim (“spear, lance, javelin”).[4][1][2] Note also Northern Kurdish rimb, a by-form of rim.
J̌ahukyan derives from an unattested specialised meaning of Ancient Greek ῥύμβος (rhúmbos), ῥόμβος (rhómbos, “anything which may be turned or spun; spinning motion”): compare from it ῥυμβονάω (rhumbonáō, “swing round and throw away”).[5] Compare also the phrase ἀκόντων ἱέντα ῥόμβον (akóntōn hiénta rhómbon, “shooting forth whirling darts”) in Pindar.
