Etymology

The origin is unknown.[1][2][3] Has been compared to Arabic رُمْح (rumḥ, spear), Classical Syriac ܪܘܡܚܐ (rūmḥā, spear), Northern Kurdish rim (spear, lance, javelin).[4][1][2] Note also Northern Kurdish rimb, a by-form of rim.

J̌ahukyan derives from an unattested specialised meaning of Ancient Greek ῥύμβος (rhúmbos), ῥόμβος (rhómbos, anything which may be turned or spun; spinning motion): compare from it ῥυμβονάω (rhumbonáō, swing round and throw away).[5] Compare also the phrase ἀκόντων ἱέντα ῥόμβον (akóntōn hiénta rhómbon, shooting forth whirling darts) in Pindar.
