Borrowed from Middle Iranian *sapōδ (perhaps via Aramaic *sappōḏ, because otherwise *սապոյր (*sapoyr) is expected), from Old Iranian *sapauda-, whence Classical Persian سبوی (sabōy), سبو (sabô, cup, jug), Bactrian σαβολο (sabolo, jar) and the Tocharian B loanword sapule (jar). The connection with Persian was recognised already by Awgerean and Gēorg Dpir.
