The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *postor-, from *pos (by, about, around, beside), and cognate with Latin posterus. Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (to spread). Has also been compared to Ancient Greek ὕστερος (hústeros).
