Middle Armenian
Etymology
From Old Armenianվազ(vaz, “leap, jump, springing forward; run, running”). The basic sense is "something that has sprung forward, new shoot". Compare Russian побе́г(pobég) from бежа́ть(bežátʹ), English sprout(“to spring up; new growth on a plant”) for similar formations.[1][2][3][4] The sense "shoot (of vine)" must have existed already in Old Armenian, from which Old Georgianვაზი(vazi, “shoot”) was borrowed.
