Etymology

The origin is uncertain. According to Olsen, perhaps borrowed from an Iranian word of the form *vāiδa or *vaiδa, from Proto-Indo-European *weydʰ-, whence Sanskrit विधु (vidhú, lonely, solitary), Proto-Celtic *wēdus (wild) (note Old Armenian վայրենի (vayreni, wild)). See also վայրապար (vayrapar).

Has also been compared to Northern Kurdish war (encampment, abode; stopping place, halting place; homeland, native land; native place), Middle Persian (wl /war/, shelter, enclosure), Sanskrit वर (vára, circumference, space, room).
