Old Armenian

Etymology

As is already suggested by Nor baṙgirkʿ haykazean lezui, composed of վիզ (viz, neck) +‎ -ան (-an). Accepted by J̌ahukyan. For the semantics compare the Old Armenian expression վիզ ամբառնալ (viz ambaṙnal, to become rebellious, proud, insubordinate), ընդվզիմ (əndvzim), English stiff-necked, Russian жестоковыйный (žestokovyjnyj). Ačaṙyan unnecessarily rejects this etymology and leaves the origin of the word open.

Adjective

վզան (vzan)

  1. haughty, uncontrolled, stiff-necked
