Etymology
From Middle Iranian*vēg. Compare Avestan𐬬𐬀𐬉𐬖𐬀(vaēγa, “stroke, blow”), Persianویغ(vêğ, “scream, shouting, noise”), Sanskritवेग(vega, “violent agitation, shock, jerk”). The sense "knucklebone (also used like dice in a game)" perhaps developed from an earlier meaning of "projectile"; compare also Georgianკამათელი(ḳamateli, “die, dice”) beside კამათი(ḳamati, “argument, dispute”).
