Etymology

The origin is unknown. Looks similar to փաղանգ (pʻałang). The ending is similar to the Iranian diminutive suffix -էճ (-ēč).

Noun

փաղէժ (pʻałēž)

  1. a kind of arachnid that bites stags
    • 6th century, Philo of Alexandria, Yałags ban unel ew anasun kendaneacʻd, aṙ Liwsimakʻos  :[1][2]
Քանզի եղջերուք առ խածածս փաղիժիցն իմացան փոխանակ դեղ իւրեանց խեցգետի, որոյ կերակուրն անդէն բժկէ։
Kʻanzi ełǰerukʻ aṙ xacacs pʻałižicʻn imacʻan pʻoxanak deł iwreancʻ xecʻgeti, oroy kerakurn andēn bžkē.
      • Translation by Abraham Terian
When deer are pricked by venomous spiders, they consider hops for their remedy and are healed.

Usage notes

  • Attested only in Philo in the form փաղիժ-ից-ն (pʻałiž-icʻ-n, genitive plural), where it translates φαλάγγιον (phalángion). Some dictionaries reconstruct the nominative as *փաղիժ (*pʻałiž), but this is incorrect as the genitive plural would then be *փաղժից (*pʻałžicʻ).
  • In the manuscript margin glossed with փաղանգ (pʻałang).
