From Middle Persian 𐫛𐫡𐫍 (prh /⁠farrah⁠/), from Old Persian *farnāh, +‎ -ք (-kʻ).

The sense of “dogma, belief” is a semantic loan from Ancient Greek δόξα (dóxa, “glory; opinion, belief”). Compare ուղղափառ (ułłapʻaṙ) corresponding to Ancient Greek ὀρθόδοξος (orthódoxos, “having the right belief”).
