פרדס

From Aramaic פַּרְדֵּיסָא (pardēsā) (absolutive: פַּרְדֵּס (pardēs)), an Iranian borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *paridayjah.

פַּרְדֵּס • (pardés) m

1. orchard, grove, fruit garden
   • Tanach, Song of Songs 4:13, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:

     שְׁלָחַיִךְ פַּרְדֵּס רִמּוֹנִים עִם פְּרִי מְגָדִים כְּפָרִים עִם־נְרָדִים׃

     sh'lakháyikh pardés rimoním 'im p'rí m'gadím k'farím 'im-n'radím.
     šəlāḥáyiḵ pardēs rimmōnīm ʿim məḡāḏīm kəp̄ārīm ʿim-nərāḏīm.

     Thy shoots are a park of pomegranates, with precious fruits; henna with spikenard plants,

     עָשִׂיתִי לִי גַּנּוֹת וּפַרְדֵּסִים וְנָטַעְתִּי בָהֶם עֵץ כָּל־פֶּרִי׃

     ʿāśī́ṯī lī gannōṯ ūp̄ardēsīm wənāṭáʿtī ḇāhem ʿēṣ kol-pérī.

     I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit;

     Moreover I said unto the king: ‘If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through till I come unto Judah; and a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's park, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the castle which appertaineth to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into.’ And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
