Related to Akkadian 𒆠𒂗𒄀 (Šumerum, “Sumer”), Egyptian sꜣngꜣr (“Babylonia”), Hittite 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (/⁠šanhar(a)⁠/), all likely ultimately from Sumerian 𒌦𒊕𒈪𒂵 (ug̃₃ sag̃-gig₂-ga /⁠ug̃ Sag̃-Giga⁠/, “Sumerians”, literally “black-headed people”) or 𒆠𒂗𒄀 (ki-en-gi /⁠Kengir⁠/, “Sumer”, literally “place of the noble lords”).
