Etymology

From Middle Persian (hmwhtn', hmwc-, hmwz- /⁠hāmmōxtan, hāmmōz-⁠/, “to teach, learn”), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *mauč (“to learn, teach”).

The Iranian root is perhaps abstracted from Proto-Iranian *ham-Hauč, from Proto-Iranian *ham- (“together”) + Proto-Iranian *Hauč (“learning”), the latter a denominal form of Proto-Iranian *yauč (“to learn, teach”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ewk- (“to be accustomed”).

Direct cognate with Northern Kurdish hêvotin (“to teach”); outside of Iranian, compare Sanskrit उच् (uc, “to take pleasure, be accustomed”), Old Armenian ուսանիմ (usanim, “to learn”), Lithuanian jùnkti (“to learn”), Polish uczyć (“to teach; to learn”), Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (biūhts, “accustomed to”).

2. (transitive, used with به) to teach

   آموزگار درس را به شاگردان آموخت.

   âmuzgâr dars râ be šâgerdân âmuxt.

   The teacher taught the lesson to the students.
