Via Middle Persian (ʾmbk' /⁠ambag⁠/, “*mango; a preserve, conserve”). The alternative form عَنْبَة (ʕanba) / عَْنْبَا (ʕanbā) is from Neo-Persian انبه (anba) as well as directly via Apabhraṃśa from Sanskrit आम्र (āmra, “mango”). Later again borrowed from modern Indo-Aryan languages into the dialects, as from Marathi the Iraqi Arabic عَمْبَة (ʕamba, “mango pickle mash”).
