اِسْتَطَاعَ • (istaṭāʕa) X, non-past يَسْتَطِيعُ‎ (yastaṭīʕu)

1. (transitive) to be able to, to be capable of, can (followed by a noun or a verbal noun in the accusative or by أَنْ (ʔan) and the subjunctive)

   Synonym: قَدَرَ (qadara)

   Antonym: عَجَزَ (ʕajaza)

   أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أُدَرِّسَ. ― ʔastaṭīʕu ʔan ʔudarrisa. ― I can teach.

   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 55:33:

     يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنسِ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَن تَنفُذُوا مِنْ أَقْطَارِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ فَانفُذُوا ۚ لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلْطَانٍ

2. Used to make a request
   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 5:112:

     إِذْ قَالَ ٱلْحَوَارِيُّونَ يَا عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ هَلْ يَسْتَطِيعُ رَبُّكَ أَن يُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْنَا مَائِدَةً مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاءِ ۖ قَالَ ٱتَّقُوا ٱللَّهَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

     When the disciples said, "Oh, Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send down for us a table (with food on it) from heaven?", he said, "Fear Allah, if you are believers"
