From Middle Persian (DWBŠYA, ʾngpyn' /⁠angubēn⁠/, honey), from Proto-Iranian *Hangubáynah.

Cognate with Northern Kurdish hingiv, Zazaki engemin, Central Kurdish ھەنگِوین (hengiwîn) and Talysh انگوین (anqevin).

Probably not related انگ (ang), which means yellowjacket; instead related to انگم (angom, resin).
