Usage notes

• ایستادن (istâdan) refers to the action of standing up, not the state of standing. Hence the Persian equivalent for English "to stand" is the perfect conjugation of ایستادن (istâdan), i.e. "to have stood up". The same is true of نشستن (nešastan, “to sit down”).
• Speakers in Afghanistan, especially in informal contexts, tend to compound verbs even if they have independent conjugations. So speakers from Afghanistan will more often say ایستاد شدن (īstād šudan) and ایستاد کردن (īstād kardan) than the verb forms provided below.
