From Arabic مَكَان (makān). For the M -> B change, compare سناب (sanāb, hump) from Arabic سَنَام (sanām), صنب (ṣanab, idol) from Arabic صَنَم (ṣanam)[1] and بعشوم (baʿšōm, jackal, fox) from Beja b'ashoob. Cognate with Chadian Arabic بكان (bakān).
