From Arabic مَكَان (makān). For the M -> B change, compare سناب (sanāb, “hump”) from Arabic سَنَام (sanām), صنب (ṣanab, “idol”) from Arabic صَنَم (ṣanam)[1] and بعشوم (baʿšōm, “jackal, fox”) from Beja b'ashoob. Cognate with Chadian Arabic بكان (bakān).
