From Middle Persian pndk' (pondik, hazelnut), from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν (Pontikón, Pontic nut), q.v. From hazelnuts, the sense spread to similarly shaped pebbles used in slings and similar projectile weapons and then to early muskets.
