Possibly related to تازیک (tâzik), a re-borrowing from Old Turkic. According to W. Henning, from *Tāt-čīk, originally *Tād-čīk. Popular folk etymology traces the word to Tajik тоҷ (toj, “crown”) (compare Persian تاج (tâj, “crown”)).
