Inherited from Common Turkic *tamur- (“to bleed”). Transitive form of تَمّاقْ (tammāq, “to drip”). Clauson states the spelling with a fatha must be incorrect, Erdal considers the Old Uyghur form (tomur-) to be a secondary rounded form as a result of the neighbouring bilabial consonant /m/.
