From Middle Persian tmbwl, tnbwl (tambūr) (Manichaean Middle Persian tmbwr (tambūr)). According to Watkins, possibly (with metathesis of consonants) from Ancient Greek πανδοῦρα (pandoûra, “three-stringed lute”).[1][2]
