From Persian توتیا (tutiyâ, zinc oxide), from Sanskrit तुत्था (tuttha), although this last actually means “copper sulphate“. Alternatively it is from a variant of دود (dud, smoke), in the pattern of مُومِيَاء (mūmiyāʔ) and بَامِيَا (bāmiyā) and like دُخَان (duḵān, smoke).
