From Middle Persian (gʾwls /⁠gāwars⁠/, “sorghum, giant millet”), whence Persian گاورس (gâvars, “Setaria viridis”), Classical Syriac ܓܘܪܘܣ (gwrws /⁠gāwarws⁠/, “millet”), Old Armenian գաւարս (gawars), Roshani (ǰäwaws), Khufi (jawōwc, “millet”), Yidgha (ɣawarso), from Old Iranian *gāwarsa-.[1][2] Cognate with Northern Kurdish garis (“Panicum miliaceum”), Hindi ज्वार (jvār, “greater millet”).
